Needs Assessment:

 

 

 

According to the Arkansas Department of Education, a unit of Arkansas History must be taught in public schools. A Unit of Arkansas History must be taught at each grade level in elementary with an emphasis at the fifth grade level.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Goals:

By the end of the unit and after instruction at the appropriate level the students will be able to recognize the shape of Arkansas and be able to locate it on a map of the United States with 100% accuracy.

 

By the end of the unit and after instruction at the appropriate level the students will be able locate on a map and label the six states that borders Arkansas on a blank map with 85% accuracy.

 

By the end of the unit and after instruction at the appropriate level the students will be able to recognize the Arkansas state flag and will be able to interpret what each symbol on the flag represents with 100% accuracy.

 

By the end of the unit and after instruction at the appropriate level the students will be able recognize and name the following state symbols: bird, tree, insect, mammal, gem with 100% accuracy.

 

By the end of the unit and after instruction at the appropriate level the students will be able to identify that Little Rock is Arkansas State Capitol with 100% accuracy.

 

 

 

 

 

Day 1

Objective: Students will able to create a K W L chart on Arkansas.

Develop a Graphic Organizer on Arkansas with the help of the teacher and the use of the overhead projector.

 

The teacher will read N is for Natural State An Arkansas Alphabet written by Michael Shoulders. The teacher and the students will discuss the book.

Than the class will discuss the facts as a whole and complete the flag-coloring sheet by following the directions.

Day 3 and 4

Objectives: Students will be able design their own Arkansas Flag.

Students will be able to write an informative paragraph on the flag and the symbols of the flag they designed.

Modifications

The teacher and students discussed the symbols on the Arkansas Flag again to refresh their memories.

 

The teacher with the help of the students developed a web on the board on the different symbols that the students could use when designing their own Arkansas Flag.

 

The students will use the computer (clipart on the internet) and scanner to help them collect pictures for their flags.

 

The students will create their flag and write an informative paragraph on the symbols of their flag.

The completed flag and paragraph describing the flag.

During the writing activity the teacher helped the student by writing the paragraph on the board, so that she could copy the paragraph on her paper. (The student told the teacher what to writ on the board.)

Day 5

Objectives: Students will recognize that the state insect is the honeybee.

The students will actively participate in an art project on honeybees.

Objectives: Students will create and assemble an Arkansas Facts book.

Students will design a cover for their book and they will put their book together with yarn.

1 hour for designing the cover and assembling the book. The students could color the pictures in their free time and during Arkansas History time.

Day 7

Objectives: Students will be able locate Arkansas on a map of the United States.

Students will be able to locate and identify the six states that border Arkansas with the use of a map of the United States.

The teacher will demonstrate how to locate Arkansas on the map. The teacher will also define and model correct terminology for the map activity (North, South, East, and West).

 

The students in cooperative groups will locate and label Arkansas and the six bordering states on a blank map. The students will use an individual map of the United States to help them with the activity.

Objectives: Students will recognize that the Pine tree is Arkansas State Tree.

Day 10

Objectives: The students will develop great appreciation for Arkansas.

The students will be able to give correct answers in a game of Jeopardy.

The students will be able to score 85 % or better on Post-Test.

 The students will engage in a game of Jeopardy. Students will be put into 5 groups of 3 students. They will take turns as a group to answer the questions on the board.

The student will be able to use a map of the United states to help answer question 10. I used a highlighter to outline Arkansas, so the student could see the states that bordered Arkansas. When the students pointed to the state I than highlighted the name of the state, so the student could copy it on his\her test.
