1. Select three passages in the book--one near the beginning, one in the middle, and one near the end. Each passage should have ten sentences. These should be passages of text, not tables or captions under pictures.
2. Count the polysyllabic words in the three passages. These are words with three or more syllables.
3. Add up the total of polysyllabic words.
