MLED3072 Diversity/Exceptionalities News Page

Latest news as of Friday night, May 7, 2004.

This is the first time since being at Tech that I have had to give two finals on Friday of Finals Week. In fact, it's not often that I give any finals on Friday. Grades are not out yet and I hope to get them out by mid-morning on Monday. Sorry.

There is a sample of how to do the readings if you want to see it.

And here is a sample of the MLED 3072 RAP if you would like to see it. This one is written to the outline you will be given in class; similar ones but written to slightly different outlines are on the ECED3053 and SEED3554 pages.

Adaptations for mentally retarded. Present a limited amount of content, then "dwell" on it. MRs have a lot of need for repetition. Make the progression from easy to difficult a very slow progression with a lot of practice on each task to be learned. Have them show mastery over that small amount of content before they are allowed to go any further.

Learning disabled. LDs experience a lot of perceptual confusion either through visual, auditory, or tactile senses. This is a bit of an oversimplification, but it gives an idea: If the learning disability is a visual one, present LDs with handouts or other information that does not have too much on any one given page. Size 14 or 16 print, triple spaced, with at least one inch margins, is a good idea. Be aware of the readability level of what you are giving them, avoiding long words and long sentences. If possible, include pictures along with the text. You won't have to "dwell" as long on any given topic with LDs as you did for MRs. But avoid time limits and rushed situations.

Gifted. The gifted love to invent and construct things. Make assignments that have them composing poetry, music, or prose, or that has them researching a historical or scientific event. Give them large blocks of time since they are able to stay on task rather well and may resent being taken off task to do other things. Some middle schoolers may be able to "publish" their findings on web pages or Power Point presentations. They love to invent.
