The average three-pound brain has about one quadrillion connections between neurons.
Brain Basics: The Brain and Learning
Notes:
1. The total number of connections between neurons is also staggering, although it bears repeating that many of us are not stunned by the number because we have no prior knowledge or a personal schema developed for numbers that large.
2. Ask your students to guess how long they think it would take to count by ones from one to one quadrillion.
3. If an individual were to count by ones from one to one quadrillion, it would take somewhere around thirty-two million years. That’s a little over Thirty times longer than humans have been on Earth.
