Standard IV. Diversity
A Diversity committee of Sid Womack, Michele Linch, Tim Leggett, and Kandis Croom was appointed by Dr. Dennis Fleniken in August of 2002 to formulate standards (goals or objectives) for our education graduates. After several meetings, by October 29 of 2002 the following belief statements had been formulated to be put before the Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Leadership Departments:
Diversity
The University is committed to the preparation of teacher education graduates that possess sensitivities to all types of learners and people from all cultural, gender, religious, socio-economic, and cognitive backgrounds.
1. The professional believes that all people can learn, albeit in different ways and to different degrees.
2. The professional minimizes cultural, religious, ethnic, linguistic, socio-economic, gender, and cognitive barriers to learning.
3. The professional possesses knowledges, skills, and disposition to enhance learning for a diverse student population.
4. The professional recognizes how diversities affect the design of, outcomes of, interpretation of, and feedback stemming from, assessments.
5. The professional prizes the richness and quality of classroom interactions that result from diversities.
6. The professional includes all families as partners in the education process and shares information pertaining to community resources.
