Standard IV.  Diversity

A Diversity committee of Sid Womack, Michele Linch, Tim Leggett, and Kandis Croom was appointed by Dr. Dennis Fleniken in August of 2002 to formulate standards (goals or objectives) for our education graduates.  After several meetings, by October 29 of 2002 the following belief statements had been formulated to be put before the Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Leadership Departments:

Diversity

Arkansas Tech University in its social makeup resembles the community in which it is located:  Mostly white middle class.  However, it is recognized that the Pope County community has become more racially, ethically, and socio-economically diverse in the past several years due to the influx of diverse populations for industry under the North American Free Trade Act (NAFTA).

The University is committed to the preparation of teacher education graduates that possess sensitivities to all types of learners and people from all cultural, gender, religious, socio-economic, and cognitive backgrounds.

1.         The professional believes that all people can learn, albeit in different ways and to different degrees.

2.         The professional minimizes cultural, religious, ethnic, linguistic, socio-economic, gender, and cognitive barriers to learning.

3.         The professional possesses knowledges, skills, and disposition to enhance learning for a diverse student population.

4.         The professional recognizes how diversities affect the design of, outcomes of, interpretation of, and feedback stemming from, assessments.

5.         The professional prizes the richness and quality of classroom interactions that result from diversities.

6.         The professional includes all families as partners in the education process and shares information pertaining to community resources.

On February 22, 2003, Curriculum and Instruction faculty reviewed a spreadsheet which not only did curriculum mapping of these six beliefs through the secondary and middle level programs, but also spoke to all of the State Standards and all of the ISTE standards. The above six beliefs  are found to varying degrees in all secondary courses and are being mapped in middle level and early childhood as well as of this writing in August 2003.

On February 13, 2004, the committee membership changed:  Sid Womack, Connie Zimmer, V. Carole Smith, Kandis Croom, Timothy Leggett, Scott Adams.  This committee reviewed the narrative dated February 5 and also what then was Exhibits 4.1, 4.2.2 (to soon be replaced as 4.2), 4.3.1, and 4.3.2.
