Creates Visual Arts Program
Dr. Cathy Caldwell, Coordinator
Arkansas Tech University
Art Department
The Creates program is designed to provide simultaneous preservice and inservice training in a partnership approach with local schools in the Russellville area. Teams of art education majors design and implement theme based units of instruction based on the Arkansas Visual Art Frameworks.
Program Design:
Teams of preservice teachers design and practice lessons on campus prior to field.
The teams meet with cooperating teachers to discuss lesson plans, ask questions, and
locate materials.
The ATU supervisor will be at the school site to answer questions and to observe.
Students will present a lesson plan to the teacher and teach a lesson approximately one hour in length for each scheduled visit.
Student teachers are responsible for material preparation and cleanup. Teachers may need to facilitate location of materials and share classroom rules.
Mentor teachers are encouraged to offer suggestions at any point in the lesson as appropriate to facilitate a good experience for their students.
Teachers are asked to stay in the rooms during instruction and to provide feedback on the
the lessons. A checklist will be provided to facilitate the process.
Teachers may discuss outcomes with the student teachers or with the supervisor. The checklist will be picked up after every lesson is taught. ATU students really want and appreciate your feedback and constructive criticism.
An overall assessment form will be available to all participants at the program conclusion
to rate outcomes as well as provide any suggestions.
We appreciate your participation in the program and professional preparation of future
teachers. Please feel free to ask questions or call 968-0478 or further information or email
