MLED 2003– Introduction to EducationMLED 2003 is an opportunity for prospective middle level education majors to participate in guided classroom observation with time for reflection and discussion. The purpose of this experience is to help teacher candidates to understand how the system of education really works. The candidate will also gain information to help make an important career choice. Working with children is not the appropriate choice for everyone. Some candidates will discover that teaching is not for them; others will “know for sure” that they want to devote their professional life to teaching. Each decision is equally important and is equally respected.
Although the actual classroom observation phase of this course is very important, the follow-up seminars with colleagues and the instructor are equally as important in helping you to clarify the experience. It is not so much a new experience that helps us to grow, but it is the reflection on any experience. Seminar is reflection time. At the conclusion of this seminar, candidates will be able to: Discuss “teachers as decision-makers” Discuss the educational accountability system as reflected by university standards and state certification standards Discuss political and economic sources of educational control Relate philosophical ideals to classroom realities Discuss the instructional components of lessons observed Discuss classroom management Discuss the instructional strategies and techniques observed Begin development of a professional portfolio
Fifteen (15) hours of classroom observation, participation in seminars and completion of assignments is required.
The observation form from the classroom teacher must indicate that the candidate has completed a minimum of 15 hours of school-based observation/activities. Failure to complete 15 hours or a serious complaint concerning a candidates attitude or behavior will result in loss of credit for the course.
We suggest about three hours per week scheduled according to the candidate's class schedule and that of the classroom teacher. The candidate will have specific assignments for observations and interviews that will be used as a basis for seminar discussions. In order to receive full credit for assignments, the candidate must complete the assigned tasks according to a specific timetable. Specific topics for observation/review relate to:
Cultural and social aspects of the learning environment of the Middle Level Instructional content and strategies at the Middle Level Ethics and values in a democratic school system (issues of classroom management) After completing the required observations, candidates may assist in the classroom as requested. These activities could include reading to and/or listening to students' reading, assisting individual students with assignments, checking papers, filing, and other routine duties in the classroom. Please remember that the candidate is enrolled in the introduction education course and has not yet taken education foundations and methods courses. This would preclude teaching or supervision of students. If an observer should need extra guidance with attitude or behavior, the supervising teacher is asked to please contact the seminar instructor or the Director Teacher Education Student Services as soon as possible. An Observation Log Summary Form will be provided by the candidate during the first observation. A Candidate Evaluation Form will be mailed to you near the end of the semester for you to evaluate the candidate's performance
